Interview with Children's Author Mandi Williams

Tell us about your book: My book is a rhyming picture book about a little boy named Mortimer that is whisked away to another land by a large beast that turns out to be a special friend despite their differences. He is taken to a land of sweets which is really appealing to young readers as it keeps them interested in the story. This land of sweets is made up of bubblegum slides, amusement park rides, and mountains of blueberry pie. Butterscotch flowers, candy cane towers and ice cream cones in the sky. His new unexpected friend is kidnapped and he must try and save him. Mortimer is armed with a marshmallow shooter and a gummy rope.

Where is your book available? It is available at www.authorhouse.com, www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com and www.smashwords.com

What is the process for writing a children’s book? When I write of course it is probably a little different than writing an actual chapter book because I have to pay close attention to the flow of words as well as the syllable count. One extra syllable can really throw off a rhyming book.

Where did you get the idea for your book? I came up with this idea actually as a young child. I used to pretend that I was from a different land and I would tell my friends at daycare that I came here on a bubblegum slide. It wasn’t until I was an adult and a three year old child that I decided to put it into a fictional story.

How did you come up with the title? I thought Mortimer was just a unique and different name and Crump actually came from the movie The Nutty Professor. They were the Klumps and I thought that movie was hilarious so I wanted to use a similar name.

Who designed the cover? I did in Microsoft Digital Image Suite

What made you decide on writing children’s books? I have always had an overactive imagination so it really just comes naturally.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite? I have written three but as of now only one is published because I have not finished the illustrations for the other two. That is the hard part for me. I am a perfectionist and I like everything to look good.

When did you write your first book and how old were you? My first book I began at 24 and I put it aside for several years and decided to finish it around 33.

Was it hard to get your book published? I decided to self publish because I am a good promoter and I felt that it was something I could do and I really didn’t want to wait any longer than I had.

Did you ever dream of being an author? I have written poems and stories since I was very young. My favorite author was always Shel Silverstein. I love his style.

Tell us something interesting about yourself: I am also a mother of three kids and I have my own photography business called Snapshotz ‘n’ More that is doing very well. Five years ago, I was working as a realtor and I was not really happy with my line of work as it really didn’t fit my personality. I was pregnant with my 3rd child at the time and went into premature labor. I had the baby 12 weeks early and was told that he had a grade III bleed on his brain. The doctors said he may never walk or talk and would probably have cerebal palsy. He went through 4 blood transfusions, 2 spinal taps, hernia surgery, apnea, bradycardia, pneumonia and staph infection caused from being on the vent for an extended period of time. He is perfectly fine now and you’d never know he was a preemie. He is learning remarkably well and is actually ahead of most of his classmates. Do to his hospital stay, I had to quit the job I was doing and a couple years later I began to focus on doing what I love, photography and writing.  In my thank you poem in my book, I want to share my final lines. “And a final thanks to God, I know you had a plan. When my baby was in the NICU, you grabbed me by the hand. To make me quit a job I wasn’t happy doing. You knew that my creative side was deep inside me brewing.”

About Mandi: I am a 34 year old mother of three, writer/illustrator, and a photographer.
